Senior Carbon Projects Specialist
Are you passionate to tackle climate change? Do you want to work with organizations from all over the world? Are you an experienced AFOLU carbon expert with strong technical knowledge in carbon methodologies, GHG quantification, and MRV systems? Do you want to contribute to advancing climate mitigation and sustainable land management globally? If so, the Senior Carbon Projects Specialist role at Preferred by Nature may be the ideal opportunity for you.
What you can expect:
As a Senior Carbon Projects Specialist, you will serve as a technical expert in AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use) carbon initiatives. You will support the design, development, and quality assurance of high-integrity carbon projects, ensuring scientific rigor and alignment with recognized voluntary and compliance carbon standards.
This role offers the opportunity to work remotely and contribute to global climate mitigation efforts through validation, verification, and development of robust carbon methodologies.
Working with us is never routine so the first year you can expect the following areas to be central to your work.
Provide technical leadership in the design and development of AFOLU carbon projects, including GHG quantification, baselines, additionality, and leakage assessment
Design and strengthen Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems to ensure environmental integrity and transparency
Contribute to drafting, revision, and improvement of carbon standards and methodological frameworks
Conduct technical due diligence, feasibility assessments, and quality assurance reviews of carbon initiatives
Support validation and verification processes under recognized standards (e.g., VCS, CCB, Gold Standard, Plan Vivo) and potentially contribute to carbon auditing activities
Utilize remote sensing, GIS tools, and carbon accounting methodologies to assess carbon stocks and emissions reductions
Contribute strategically to the Climate & Restoration Programme, including cross-service integration, fundraising support, and development of training materials

Begin providing technical input to project design, GHG quantification approaches, and feasibility assessments, while supporting internal coordination and knowledge sharing.
Within six months, you will:
Lead or co-lead methodological design and technical review of AFOLU carbon projects, including baselines, additionality, leakage, and carbon stock assessment methodologies.
Design and strengthen Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems to ensure environmental integrity, transparency, and compliance with recognized voluntary and compliance carbon standards.

Serve as a senior technical advisor on AFOLU carbon initiatives, supporting complex project design, quality assurance reviews, and integration of remote sensing and GIS-based carbon accounting methodologies.
Contribute strategically to the Climate & Restoration Programme by supporting fundraising proposals, cross-service integration of climate components, training material development, and expansion of high-integrity carbon services globally.
Important that you:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental science, forestry, agriculture, or related field
Proven experience with AFOLU carbon projects under recognized standards (VCS, CCB, Gold Standard, Plan Vivo, or similar)
Strong knowledge of forestry, agriculture, land-use dynamics, and carbon accounting principles
Experience in validation and verification processes is highly desirable
